In 2020, yes, that year, I found myself craving a new creative outlet, and I dove into the art of calligraphy. I loved it so much that soon after, I started selling custom ornaments and taking on calligraphy projects.
When my parents passed away in 2022, I took a break from creative work and instead found myself journaling more and digging deeper into my Catholic faith. My creative spirit was
renewed when I discovered surface pattern design in early 2023, and the calling to create Mimi + Manuel was born.
Guillermina was a tough little Mexican lady who spoke loudly and always got things done. Everyone who knew her called her Mimi. Manuel was a Colombian gentleman, always in a suit and tie, even in the summer, and had a soft heart for his girls.
Mimi and Manuel immigrated to Queens, New York with very little and without knowing the language. Their paths crossed in Sunnyside, Queens, and the rest, as they say, is history. They raised my sisters and me in a small townhouse in Jamaica, Queens, and instilled in us a strong work ethic, honesty, and a determination to excel in all we do.
